Bootstrap/Get started - OpenStack Components

This page documents the core top-level OpenStack components from the Juno release that will and will not be included in the first release of OPNFV. Following the BGS theme, this contains as few components as possible.

Baseline OpenStack Components

Name Description Justification
NovaComputeCompute resources for VNFs
Neutron*NetworkingConfigure network connectivity
GlanceVM (VNF) image repositoryStore the VNF images
SwiftObject storageRequired by glance to store images
KeystoneIdentify serviceAuthenticate user access to OpenStack

Excluded OpenStack Components

Name Description Justification
CinderBlock storageObject storage can be used for persistence and run stateless VNFs
HorizonDashboardUI’s make for nicer demos, but the use cases can be performed using CLIs and APIs without the UI
CeilometerTelemetryDisplay usage and provide an access point for billing. The Doctor project currently has a dependency on this component
HeatOrchestrationSimplify the installation and lifecycle management of VNFs
TroveDatabase service

Next Steps

  1. Validate the use cases can be covered without any of the excluded items.
  2. Document all of the modules, versions, repos, and configuration options for each of these components.
  3. OpenDaylight installation documentation assumes that OpenStack is running and configured using the neutron-openvswich-agent. Will OPNFV follow this process or start with ODL on a clean installation?
